What Is the Purpose of the European Health Insurance Card?

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) confirms your entitlement to French health insurance and facilitates access to medical care during temporary stays in any European Union member state, as well as in Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. With this card, you can receive necessary healthcare under the same conditions and at the same cost as residents of the country you are visiting.

It helps you avoid paying significant medical expenses upfront in certain countries and ensures access to healthcare services without complex administrative procedures. The EHIC is particularly useful for short stays, whether for tourism, business, or academic purposes.

How to Use the EHIC Abroad?

In the event of a medical need, simply present your EHIC to the hospital or healthcare professional. You will receive treatment under the same conditions as local residents. In some cases, you may need to pay the medical fees upfront and then apply for reimbursement from your French health insurance fund.

It’s important to note that the EHIC does not cover planned treatments abroad (such as scheduled surgery) or medical repatriation. For such situations, additional private insurance is strongly recommended.

How to Obtain the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)?

Obtaining the EHIC is simple and free of charge. It can be requested by anyone who is entitled to Social Protection in France.

The card is personal, issued individually, and valid for two years. Each family member, including minor children, must have their own card.

  • The application process is available to all individuals covered by French Social Protection and can be completed in several ways:
  • Online: through your personal account on the Assurance Maladie website (Ameli.fr). This fast and convenient option allows the card to be sent directly to your home.
  • By phone: by contacting your health insurance fund on 36 46 (free service + standard call charges).
  • In person: by visiting your local health insurance fund office directly.

It is advisable to apply at least two weeks before your departure to ensure you receive the card in time. In the event of a late application, a provisional replacement certificate may be issued. This certificate has the same value as the EHIC but is valid for a limited period.
