Your questions
Here are the main steps with the Primary Health Insurance Fund (CPAM) to enable your foreign employees and their families to benefit from the same healthcare coverage as French employees, regardless of their health status:
- Collection of information and documents and preparation of the file for the Primary Health Insurance Fund
- Submission of the file to the Primary Health Insurance Fund
- Obtaining the Social Security number (Temporary Identification Number or NIA) / Declaration of the attending physician
- Certification of the Social Security number
- Obtaining the Carte Vitale (following receipt of the Carte Vitale application form)
- Opening the AMELI account and obtaining the certificate of entitlement
Registration is the very first affiliation, obtaining a French Social Security number for the first time. This is necessary for anyone taking up work or residence in France to benefit from health coverage.
Reactivation of rights applies to those who had a number previously and need to reopen and reactivate their rights with the health insurance fund. The general term covering both is affiliation to the French Social Security system.
Minor children are attached to their parents’ accounts as beneficiaries (ayant-droit).
As soon as they join the French social security system, minors children also obtain a social security number, but are only considered as beneficiaries until they reach the age of majority.
This status means that their healthcare in France is covered by the Carte Vitale of one or both parents.
Minors children can obtain their own Carte Vitale from the age of 16.
