UK: Global Talent Visa expanded to 100+ R&D companies
The Global Talent visa is the UK route for recognised leaders or those with exceptional potential in three fields: academic research, arts and culture, and tech. Access requires an endorsement from a Home Office-approved body, unless the applicant has won a prestigious prize on the official list.
One of the four endorsement routes is the UKRI Endorsed Funder pathway: an accelerated process for people employed or hosted by a UKRI-approved research organisation on a project funded by an endorsed funder. Until August 2026, only universities and public institutes could use this route.
On 6 August 2026, the UK government announced the opening of the route to more than 100 private companies with significant R&D activity. This is the first time.
UKRI Global Talent Visa: 100 companies and eight sectors
✅ More than 100 companies now eligible: The UKRI Endorsed Funder pathway, previously restricted to universities and public research institutes, is now open to commercial organisations with high research intensity for the first time.
✅ AstraZeneca, Jaguar Land Rover and GSK among those approved: The list of approved host organisations spans large pharmaceutical and automotive groups alongside deeptech start-ups such as Riverlane and Notpla.
✅ Eight sectors under the Modern Industrial Strategy: Artificial intelligence, life sciences, clean energy, advanced manufacturing and quantum technologies are among the areas covered.
The list of approved host organisations is maintained by UKRI and updated regularly.
This is not a new visa category, but an expansion of the UKRI Endorsed Funder pathway — one of the four existing routes to the Global Talent visa. Before August 2026, only universities and public institutions could host researchers through this route. This distinction matters for HR teams assessing whether their international researchers are eligible before submitting an application.
This development adds to a broader series of changes in UK immigration. Employers are also tracking updates to the UK Sponsor Licence. For assignments not covered by the Global Talent visa, Global Business Mobility visas and the Skilled Worker visa — often better suited to technical profiles outside research — remain alternatives worth considering.
Global Talent Visa: the key steps
- Check whether your organisation is on the UKRI approved host organisation list before considering the Global Talent visa for a researcher.
- Keep the UKRI endorsement step — specific to the Endorsed Funder pathway — separate from the visa application itself, submitted to the Home Office afterwards.
The FTRI (Future Technology Research and Innovation) is a UKRI programme under the Government Authorised Exchange visa. It allows UK companies in targeted technology sectors to host foreign researchers and specialists for research or training assignments of up to two years.
Currently limited to a small number of organisations, FTRI is set to open to more R&D businesses working in areas such as AI, quantum computing and engineering biology. The announcement has been made. The new terms have not yet been published.

No. Researchers already engaged in a process through a university or approved public institution are not affected. The expansion opens the route to private companies but does not change existing procedures.
UKRI endorsement and the Home Office visa application are two separate steps. The overall timeline depends on the researcher’s profile and consular workload at the time of submission. Plan for several months, and start the process as soon as the hire is confirmed.
Not right now. UKRI stopped accepting new nominations on 30 July 2026. The 100+ companies added this summer were selected through a targeted process, in partnership with professional organisations. Companies that want to be considered can register their interest on the UKRI Engagement Hub. There is no guarantee of inclusion, but it is the only route available at this stage.
